LINDEN A new fleet of buses is now in operation at Sequoia Village School.

For more than 15 years, Principal Mindy Savoia said, the school has contracted with an outside bus company.

In the 16th year, the school had their own busses to transport students. Funding was subsequently reduced, causing Sequoia to rely on parents to transport their children to school.

Then the school resumed their own busing and absorbed the transportation costs by contracting with an outside company for more than a year.

Now, after almost 20 years of absorbing transportation costs, contracting with outside companies and relying on parents, the school rolled forward Aug. 9 with a new fleet of buses provided by the school's parent company, Edkey Inc.

Sequoia Village School provides free busing throughout Show Low, Pinetop-Lakeside, White Mountain Lakes, Snowflake-Taylor, Linden, Pinedale, Clay Springs, Heber-Overgaard and has just added routes even closer to Concho and Vernon.

"For over 15 years, Sequoia Village School contracted with an outside bus company. Now, moving into our 20th year, Sequoia Village School owns and operates six of its it own buses," Principal Mindy Savoia, M.Ed, said. "Possessing our own buses gives SVS flexibility of routes, field trips and transportation during the school day, as well as during the after school 21st Century Community Learning Center grant."

The school has also added its own radio system, transportation office, and has hired drivers and a dispatcher. Parent company Edkey Inc. provides and maintains driver training and certifications.

Located at 982 Full House Lane in Linden, Sequoia Village is a K-12 tuition-free Arizona charter school with a student body of only a few hundred.
