SHOW LOW — Sequoia Village School became the first in the White Mountains to officially launch the high school graduation season.

The school conducted its ceremonies May 19 that saw 18 high school seniors earn their diplomas.

While the graduating class was relatively small, they were clearly not short on spirit and talent. Principal Mindy Savoia opened the ceremony and presented diplomas to the students. The Sequoia Village gymnasium was packed with anxious parents, friends and family of the graduating class. Sequoia Village is a K-12 tuition-free Arizona charter school.

"Sequoia Village High School's graduating class of 2017 has been a very innovative group. We have been notified that nine of our 18 seniors received scholarships thus far," Savoia said. "Others have earned college credits from Northland Pioneer College, as well as NAVIT certifications. Some will move into the armed forces. Many seniors have participated in community service volunteer hours and activities. We are confident that their spirit to succeed and make a positive impact will take them far."

After each graduate received their diploma and shook hands with their teachers, they were given a rose. Each graduate then walked out into the crowd and presented the rose to one person they felt was supportive, inspirational and integral to their success.

This was one of the first high school graduation ceremonies of the season. Upcoming ceremonies are as follows:
